Losing data and experiencing a hard drive failure can be a costly, stressful ordeal.
The ability to make the right decision and get back on track quickly is critical and only adds to that stress.
- From general questions on how we can help, to more specific information on our services and recovery process, pricing and time lines - call and speak to a data recovery specialist anytime or email our 24hr client support department.
- For more information on who we are and data recovery in general please feel free to browse the different resources within our web site.

Step 2: CONSULT: One-On-One Data Recovery Advice

If you've lost data and need help NOW, call in anytime for one-on-one no-charge advice on how we can help.
- You talk, we'll listen.
Once we know more about your device and how it failed our recovery technicians will be able to provide you with a competitive cost and timeline estimate tailored to your job.
Whether you've suffered a software failure or a more severe mechanical failure we'll make sure you're comfortable with exactly what our data recovery process involves and provide you a written emailed copy of all pricing and timeline estimates discussed with you during our meet.

Data Recovery Process Step 2

Data Recovery Process Step 3

Step 3: EVALUATION: Inspection and Diagnostic

You've met with a Data Recovery technician and you're ready to continue with a hands-on evaluation.

Starting your recovery is a painless process which simply involves completing our "Quick-Start" online job form and finally packaging the device needing recovery service. *This can also be done by phone if you prefer.

Evaluation period generally takes from between 24 to 72 hours depending on the severity of damage and will allow our lab to properly assess the level of failure and from there, recommend a course for recovery.
-Once full evaluation has been completed you'll receive detail of our findings as well as a file-listing or "snapshot" of all recovered data. This is presented to you in writing along with a job quotation to be reviewed one-on-one with a professional Data Recovery technician.

Step 4: Data Retrieval and Restoration

Evaluation is completed and you've reviewed our findings - Recovery of your data is only a matter of time.

TimeLine on final recovery will have been provided during the evaluation process so at this point our data retrieval and restoration is completed and your final recovered data-set returned to you on a replacement hard drive.

During the time we have your device in for recovery you'll be able to contact your Data Recovery technician anytime by phone, email Or by logging in directly to your job ticket and checking status.

Data Recovery Process Step 4

Data Recovery Process Step 5

Step 5: THE FINALE - Job Completion & Data Returned

Getting your data back to you is our primary concern from job start - to Job completion.
We offer a few different ways to return your data which are all detailed during the evaluation period of your recovery.
- Average turnaround time to complete recovery ranges between 3 to 5 days – with more severe failures taking between 5 to 10 days.  *Priority/Emergency job status is available if required-Please ask.
Options for returning data include; Hard Drive, DVD, Direct Download, or Data Back-Up (*see below) - Time sensitive or Priority data that needs to be put back into circulation ASAP can be located and recovered first. We'll also make any mission critical data available to you immediately via direct download helping to minimize downtime.

Once your data has been safely returned, we'll keep your Job open for another 8 days in order to address any "post-recovery" service/support questions you might have. During that time we'll also keep a backup copy of your recovered data-set in safe-storage so that we're able to act quickly if something should happen and you require access to that data for any reason.

…Its nothing personal but we'd rather not see you again!

All of us here at Nerdcore computers service centre  Data Recovery believe that once you've been though the recovery process it's up to us to help you prevent against a repeat failure.     "I was worried that critical year end business files were gone forever! In fact I was told by another company that it wasn't likely they could recover them within my budget. Nerdcore computers service centre not only recovered my hard drive they responded quickly and with amazing service. WOW! The system that nerdcore computers service centre Data Recovery has in place really brings me to tears (tears of joy! that is--the data loss was tears of an entirely different nature). At each part of the process, I can tell that you have documentation, notes, and identifiable steps that allow me to be "in the loop". I must say I don't get the same thing from the previous recovery services we've been forced to try.     Vacation pic's saved!!

Kerry & Staff, Small Business
Melbourne CBD

"As a small business in food services our knowledge of computer IT is limited. After a weekend power outage and crash of our main office PC, we weren't in a position to negotiate and for time sake ended up going with the first data recovery company we found online. A partial recovery and quoted job cost much higher than was agreed to led us to Nerdcore computers service centre Data recovery. They salvaged our hard drive, completed the job and most importantly, they understood our budget.

Lisa & Howard
Melbourne CBD

"I wanted to let you know that the dust has settled and that the service provided by your group was very much appreciated. It was having someone to speak with that really knew their stuff! One of the best attributes during our business relationship was the feeling that you were not trying to oversell your services. If anything, you were too modest with the skill sets of your team. I have to say that the results speak for themselves."

Doug & Shannon,
Melbourne CBD

"We didn't think this could happen to us. Not only had we lost our current project work but also our digital catalogue system - gone, with no backup. Nerdcore computers service centre Data recovery  assessed the situation quickly and through all the chaos, got our data back. They even dealt with the hard drive manufacturer assisting with the warranty on our damaged hard drives. Professional and very conscientious. Went above and beyond, doing more than we ever expected, thank you!

Peter, PP&L Contract Harvesting
Melbourne CBD

"Just a quick email to let you guys know that you saved our year end, not to mention client project co-ordinates and other company info we didn't know we needed until it was gone. Great to know that you folks are based out west! Every other facility we contacted was either out East or down in the Melbourne CBD . Nerdcore computers service centre data  recovery dealt with us by phone, one-on-one and explained everything.

"Regards from Sanders family. Emergencies can happen anywhere! Summer vacation to Melbourne could have ended horribly. Our camera and memory card were damaged by a day at the beach 3 days before we were due to return home. We were in Brisbane at the time when my wife contacted nerdcore computers service centre Data recovery .They knew right what to do – data recovered and their direct download service meant our pic's were back in our hands inside of 2 days.

Nerdcore computers service centre is recommended by manufactures worldwide including Apple, Lenovo & Dell. We provide a high-contact customer focused experience, suffering data loss can be traumatic whether you are an individual with family pictures or a business with lost financials. Nerdcore computers service centre has built a team with the talent, experience and innovative processes to handle the most challenging cases.
Dropped, Damaged External Hard Drives

External drives are frequently knocked off desks and tables, when the drives are powered up clients often report a ticking or clicking sound from the drive. The clicking you hear is caused when the drive repeatedly attempts to calibrate and fails.
If your drive is in this state, please contact us by phone (24 Hours) or use the contact form above. Describe the situtation along with the make model of the device so that we can offer an accurate quote and provide approriate advice.
External Hard Drive Recovery - (MyBook, GoFlex)

Nerdcore computers service centre offers recovery services for external USB hard drives. Western Digital MyBooks, WD MyPassports, Seagate GoFlex and Seagate FreeAgent external drives frequently fail leaving data innacesable. Let us know the make and model of your drive along with a description of the syptoms and cause if known. We reply 24 hours a day with quotes and advice to protect your data when the drives are in a degraded state.
Andriod and Apple SmartPhone Recovery Services (iPhone, iPod, Galaxy, Note)

Due to high demand nerdcore computers service centre is now providing a new powerful hardware based SmartPhone and Tablet recovery service for Android and Apple devices. Using new direct memory access technolgy developed by nerdcore computers service centre our process effectivy elimiates the problem of memory access on handheld devices. We recover deleted Texts (SMS), contacts, photos, videos, music, documents from the device memory or micro SD cards.

RAID Data Recovery (NAS, SAN, IBM, HP, DROBO)

Many of our customers suffer problems with RAID arrays when one drive fails leaving the system in a degraded state, still functional but not “redundant”. Additional minor issues (like 1 bad block) can lead to a fully degraded state. After a reboot the controller may be able to mount all drives again but the data won’t be 100% integral (in good condition). You will often see some damaged files or lost databases entries etc.

Any rebuild or initialization process of an array in a degraded state can potentially destroy data, chances are that other disks are also functioning in a degraded state with a high degree of complete failure when they are taxed during a rebuild process. Initiating a rebuild in this state is not recommended. Imaging the functional disks and performing a manual rebuild is safest way to ensure the integrity of your data.

How To Remove Viruses and Service Your Computer | Nerdcore computer repairs virus removal help | Instrcutions on how to remove computer virus for dummies

Computer Viruses, Pop ups and annoying programs are a thing of every day computing life for some people, But it doesn’t have to be. After working with computers for 20+ years we have found the tools and tricks to rid your PC of viruses and get it running like new again! We have put together a list of the best virus removal tools (in our opinion) and what they do.

You often hear people say “your computer needs a service”, But what does that actually mean. In the industry, Computer servicing can have multiple meanings, however it usually relates to the software side of computing. So when they say your PC is being serviced, They usually mean they are going to remove all viruses and pop-ups from your PC.
Virus Removal Disclaimer

While we have taken all care in our virus removal guide, THINGS CAN GO WRONG. Please be sure before you proceed, You have a backup of all your important files! Lets begin! We will be revolving around Windows 8/10 in our guide. As good as you think Windows 7 may be, It is an old operating system and we will not be covering it in this guide. The basics are the same but some Windows specific tricks for virus removal will be slightly different.
Getting Started, Speeding Up Startup

The first thing to do when you start working on your PC is to get a blank piece of paper and a pen. Put it in front of you and record everything you do with the machine. This way if something is removed from the PC that shouldn’t be, you can easily refer back to what needs to be reinstalled. We will start by checking the computers current state by recording the boot time and what applications are starting with the PC.

Start by removed unnecessary start up programs. To do this in Windows 10 right click on the Start Menu > Task Manager and then select the tab Start Up

windows 10 startup disable programs virus removal

Right click an item to disable it in this screen

Here you can normally go ahead and disable everything to speed up your startup in Windows 10, However most virus applications will be using a service instead. Be careful disabling things that relate to external hardware here (headphones, mice, keyboards) as that might affect the 3rd party functions. After you have disabled some start up items, then restart the computer.

What Programs For Virus Removal

While there are literally thousands of programs that will remove viruses, This is a list of the best ones that have had a lot of success and praise from the community. I have posted these programs in the order that I usually run them in. Simply download from the links provided and run the programs in most cases

ADWCLEANER

Adwcleaner is one of the most effective programs in the business right now for removing Adware, Toolbars and potentially unwanted programs. It is also one of the most simple applications. 99.9% of the time you can load the program, Hit Scan and have a quick glance to make sure its not going to remove any critical file, And then you click Clean. Its that simple. You will have to restart after this. We will move onto the next application…

MALWAREBYTES

Yet another application. This one focuses more on Virus and Malware removal. This one takes a lot longer to run simply because it will scan over every file. Highly regarded in the community for removing Viruses and speeding up your PC. A very small program and the free version works perfectly fine.

CCLEANER

CCleaner is a little bit different to the other applications we posted. This program will go through the registry, temporary files etc and remove all the junk from the background. It is one of the ONLY true registry cleaners out there.
What next?

After you have run all these applications. You can check out removing unwanted software by going to the “Programs and Features” section. Keeping this clean and the old junk off your computer helps. Also look for anything obscure that resembles the pop ups you were getting (Slimware is a big one to remove). Also double check your browser extensions and make sure there is nothing fishy in there.
How to prevent Virus Removal again?

One of the BEST ways to prevent getting viruses, adware and spyware on your computer is to just be aware of what you’re clicking. One application that is highly recommended to use is simply Google Chrome with the AdBlock Plus Extension. This will stop ALOT of the junk popping up on most websites. However AdBlock Plus may interfere with some content on some sites.

That’s it for this guide. We will be posting more Windows related content soon, Happy reading. If you have ANY questions regarding virus removal, Then post them below and we will do our best to help you.

Internet Security and Keeping your Online Identity Safe

Inter(net) Security and Online Safety

In todays day in age it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep your online identity safe. Especially when business giants like Sony, Commonwealth Bank and Microsoft are sending apology letters for security breaches. Which means someone has access to every piece of information about us, like our social security numbers, bank account information, home addresses…you get the point.
The Nerdcore Computer Service Centre team believes Internet Security is top priority not only for us as an organization, but for everyone who is using computers and mobile devices like tablets and smartphones. So we have put together a list of 3 practices that will help you fortify your online identity.
  1. Bulletproof Passwords – First and foremost, you should be using multiple passwords and not the same password for all of your accounts. Secondly take your time and make them difficult to guess by adding upper and lower case letters as well as numbers and special characters. If its easy to remember, it’s easy to crack. There is a FREE http://askthegeek.kennyhart.com/password-meter/ TOOL to help you identify how strong your password is. One last note, create an excel spreadsheet or word doc with all logins and passwords and keep in a safe place offline.
  2. S stands for SECURE – When purchasing something online or starting an account where you are entering private information such as your credit card number or social security number, make sure you pay attention to the web address. A secure website should read like this: HTTPS://www.fakewebsite.com
If there is no S at the end of HTTP, don’t use it.
  1. Social Security- No, We are not talking about the check you receive from the government. We are talking about all of the private information we share through social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Information like our birthdays, addresses and telephone numbers are easy ways for people to piece together enough information to create fraudulent accounts and ultimately steal your identity. Through your accounts “Privacy Settings” you have the ability to control what information is shared with your friends and acquaintances through your social channels.
Our goal in sharing this information is to help you safeguard you and your family from any type of cyber attack that could potentially hurt you in anyway.
Keep checking back on our blog for more updated tips to keep your Internet experience, a safe one. Until next time…

HOW TO AVOID BEING HIJACKED ONLINE!

When your PC no longer listens to you and instead takes you where it wants to go, not where you asked it to take you on the Internet, “You Have Been High jacked”

This is one of the most annoying events anyone can experience while trying to access the Internet and find important information.

What happened and how can one avoid it?

The most common way to get “hijacked” is to download a program, (even a legitimate one).  What you may not realize is that during the acceptance process, you are being asked to say yes about a dozen times.  READ THESE QUESTIONS VERY CAREFULLY!

Often, you are being asked to accept the download of other unrelated programs.  Often these other “Rogue Programs” are not related to the original program you wanted to  download and you end up having your PC controlled by unscrupulous programmers who take you to “Coupon Web Sites” or Sites that want to sell you something.  Especially Sites that now want to fix your “broken PC”.  Even worse, some of these companies install a “cookie” on your PC which allows them to access your computer any time they wish and hold your data hostage, “Cryptolocker”.

If you are Tech savvy, you can attempt to perform an uninstall through Windows Program/Features, “Uninstall” within Control Panel, but often these programs contain hidden files and make that virtually impossible.  When this happens, you can call us nerdcore computers service centre and our expert team are based in Australia, all of which are Windows and MAC Certified will have to run a series of passes with a variety of diagnostic software programs in an attempt to remove these malicious programs.  In the worst of cases, our Certified Technicians will have to go into the Windows Registry and remove files one at a time until the program is weak enough to allow a removal through the Uninstall Feature in control Panel.

The bottom line is this:

Do Not Download Anything unless you know and trust its source.  Please read each prompt before clicking “YES”!

These Rouge Programs pay the legitimate Companies money each time they are downloaded from the initial legitimate download.  Whether you realize it or not, this same event is occurring when you buy a new PC and you often end up downloading a bunch of programs that you don’t need which slow down your PC during what you thought was a mandatory set-up of your new computer.

Nerdcore computers service centre is available to help unlock your PC from these unscrupulous programs and optimize your PC’s performance by removing unwanted programs, enabling your PC to run faster than it did when it was brand new.

All of our Technicians are based in Australia who are PC/MAC Certified, most with Network Certification as well.  We stand ready and willing to help you with the repair and training of your device so you can be in control of your own destiny with your computer and on the Internet.

Take care, because we do

In the Computer Repair business, not all companies are the same.  WHEN ANYONE CALLS YOU AND SAYS YOUR COMPUTER IS MALFUNCTIONING, HANG UP!  There is absolutely no way to tell if your computer is malfunctioning unless you call someone and they are able to look inside, including over the Internet.  Please understand there are NO EXCEPTIONS!

COMPANIES THAT CALL YOU AND TELL YOU YOUR COMPUTER IS MALFUNCTIONING ARE SCAMMERS!

Windows vs. Macintosh Operating Systems

We use both operating systems at Nerdcore computers service centre  and realize that there are ardent users on both sides.

Windows 8 was a complete disaster and most individuals who bought computers with that operating system dreaded it.  Many still do.  While Windows captures about 90% of the market, those who use Apple’s Macintosh Computers love them.

The Windows operating system software programs are provided by 3rd Party Companies and the compatibility between them can sometimes be challenging.

Apple’s Mac on the other hand provides you with an operating system and all of the software from the same company completely integrated and in general works without any issues whatsoever.  Also, because the Mac uses it’s own software, it’s operating system is closed not open.  The significance of this is that it is much more difficult to get a virus from the Internet on an Apple Mac then it is on a Windows Computer.

However, one pays dearly for this in terms of dollars. It is not uncommon for a comparable computer made by Apple to cost more than twice as much as a similar machine which runs the Windows Operating System.

For ease of use and seamless integration we have to call it in favor of the Apple Mac.

For an open architecture allowing a user who is sophisticated to do almost anything they want, we have to call it in favor of the Windows Operating System.

Dependent upon which type of user you are, inexperienced or wanting to stretch the limits, the choice between two relies upon your intended use and how much money you can afford to spend.

Either type of computer makes our life so much easier, allowing us to keep track of things in a way we could never do before including;

-Storing tens of thousands of photographs.

-Scanning recipes and having the computer store them by type in alphabetical order.

-Having your own electronic Post Office with almost instant delivery.

-Or, having access to any information you could possibly imagine without having to have to go to the library or buy another set of Encyclopedias.  It can be found on the Internet, instantly.

If you run into trouble because you were on the Internet and downloaded something which contained malicious software or a virus and your computer begins to slow down or malfunction, whether it is an Apple Mac or a Windows PC, nerdcore computers service centre can fix it.

From the privacy of your own home when is convenient for you, simply pick up the phone and call us at 1300637326 and within minutes one of our expert Technicians we’ll be performing a repair.

If you are inexperienced, we offer Live, Semi-Private Classes from the privacy of your own home on both operating systems and the software that runs on them.  We even offer classes on the proper use of both the iPhone and Android Smart Phones.

With our 100% moneyback guarantee it is almost a no-brainer.  We have to be really good what we do or we couldn’t make that offer to the public.

Happy Computing and Nerdcore computers service centre

How to unlock a Mac

Have you ever forgotten your machine password and could not gain access?  There is a simple (but dangerous) way to Unlock Your Apple Mac Computer…

When you research this issue on the Internet, you will find the Apple Support Groups discussing a variety of ways to do this, whereby some are successful and some are not.

The correct, effective and Nerdcore computers service centre way to do this is by doing the following:
1) Turn the computer off.
2) Restart the computer and at the same time hold down the “Command and R Keys together”.  Keep holding them down (possibly for several minutes depending on the model of your MAC Computer and however long it takes to boot) until the “Apple Logo” appears.
3) You will then be at the Apple “Utility”.  BE VERY CAREFUL HERE, DOING SOMETHING WRONG NOW COULD PERMANENTLY ERASE EVERYTHING ON YOUR COMPUTER!  You could even erase the operating system which would prevent you from using the computer again without sending it into Apple for Repair.  However, under this circumstance,  ALL OF YOU DATA WOULD BE PERMANENTLY DELETED unless you had backed it up to an external hard drive using Apple’s Utility called “Time Machine” .
4) Go to the “Utility” option at the top left of your screen and select “Terminal”.
5) Terminal will give you a small dark (probably black) box with a line and a “colon” at the end with a flashing cursor.
6) Type “resetpassword” in one word , all lower case with NO spaces.
7) An option will appear which allows you to reset your password and asks you to type it twice.
8) Carefully choose and type in your password on both lines which requests it.  This time, WRITE IT DOWN in a small spiral notebook which you should have for all of your passwords and store it in a safe place so this does not happen again.
SUCCESS!

You have successfully reset your password on any MAC.

Now, how do we know the correct way to perform this procedure when the “techies” on the Internet in the Apple User Groups which support each other don’t?

Because at Nerdcore computers service centre, we are the Pro’s!

All of our Technicians are Australia based, Certified Computer and Computer Network Technicians and know their “stuff” like the back of their hands.

If you are uncomfortable performing a delicate procedure like this yourself, you can simply call us and we will do it for you.
Anytime we perform a computer repair, we always perform a full computer “Optimization”.  This means that we “clean the junk out of the computer” resulting in a noticeable increase in performance.
Depending on how many Web Sites you visit and if you download any programs or games, a computer optimization should be performed every year to keep your computer running at it’s best.

Whatever is wrong with your computer, whether it is an Apple MAC or a Windows Computer, you can call nerdcore computers service centre and we can fix it for you!

We are so good at what we do, we offer a 100% Money Back Guarantee!

The Do’s and Don’ts for “Surfing the Internet”:

There are important safety tips everyone should use when “Surfing the Internet”.
  • You need to be very careful about sharing your personal information with anyone on the Internet. Doing things like telling people about where you are going and where you have been is way too much information to share.
  • If someone knows you are going to Thailand for the week, it is a pretty safe bet your house will be empty and easy to rob.
  • When you share where you have been and where you are going, the same rule applies. This information also creates a “profile” of your behavior and makes it easier for someone to predict your absence or presence somewhere.
Never share your personal information like (correct) date of birth, make and model of your car, place you were born, address, height, weight and perhaps not even where you attended school. This makes it much easier for “Identity Theft”.
Someone could get a credit card in your name or even buy a house or car. These types of crimes are rampant on the Internet. Ask any Cyber Crimes Law Enforcement Officer. If you know anyone who has had their identity stolen, they will share with you that it took them years and a lot of money to get their good credit restored and name cleared from collection agency data bases.
If anyone calls you and tells you there is something wrong with your computer, or they are from Microsoft’s Technical Department (especially with a foreign accent) immediately “Hang-Up”! Microsoft is an 84 Billion Dollar per year company and they certainly do not have the time, resources or inclination to be calling anyone in “the public” discussing anything personal with you. These are “scam artists” who want you to let them have access to your Computer. Once connected (which they will claim will be for “free”) they will either place a “cookie” on your Computer allowing them access to you any time they wish, or download some virus, at which point they will want to charge you (probably $199-$299) to get it off.
We have had 1 instance in particular where when the individual balked at the price after the imposters were already connected, and they maliciously sabotaged her computer by removing the “Administrator Profile” making it impossible for us to repair the Computer remotely. In this instance, we had to have the Computer shipped to our hughesdale facility for repair, where we had to back-up all of her data (no names mentioned) and then completely restore the operating system, reloading her original data afterwards. This is definitely not a road you want to go down!
So the summary is this:
  • Be smart and use common sense.
  • Don’t tell the public too much about yourself.
  • Don’t let anyone you don’t trust have access to your computer.
And if you do, call us at Nerdcore computers service centre when you are done so we can fix what they have destroyed!
We can turn off “tracking” in your Internet Browsers making it much more difficult for a site you have visited to annoy you with unsolicited messages and ads.
We completely remove all viruses and malware, greyware and rouge programs. We include a complete Computer Overhaul (Optimization) with every service call so your Computer runs better than it did when it was brand new (because we remove the unwanted programs from start-up that occur during the set-up of a new Computer).
And don’t forget, we also offer Small, Semi-Private Classes (6 people or less), which are “Live” with an instructor, so you can ask for something to be re-explained if you did not understand it the 1st time.
At the end of each class, there is a 15 minute “free” Question and Answer Session. You will be amazed at how everyone in attendance will benefit from an intelligent question asked by a fellow classmate!

NEVER say “YES TO ALL” when downloading Software Programs or Drivers.

NEVER say “YES TO ALL” when downloading Software Programs or Drivers.
When you go to a Web Site to download something, you may find it daunting to answer the 10-15 questions about whether you want to download this or download that.
NEVER say “Yes to All”. (It is a check box).
Although it may seem easier to check this box rather than to read every question and have to make a conscious decision, whenever you say “Yes to All”, most often you are allowing “other” programs to be downloaded which have nothing to do with the original program or driver you were trying to acquire.

These “other” programs (which pay the primary Web Site and originator of the program for this privilege), “piggy back” other programs which often contain Malware, which do things like install unrelated programs into your start-up folder which cause your computer to slow down considerably. They sometimes even re-direct you to “Coupon Web Sites” which will annoy you forever and interfere with your ability to properly search the Internet.

Often, these other programs introduce viruses, which can cause functional difficulties, and then send you to Web Sites which offer relief for these malfunctions, of course for a price. This is the underlying scheme of why they pay* to “piggy back” in the 1st place. In the end, they want to charge you to stop your computer from malfunctioning which they were the primary cause of. Nice, huh?
The next time you download anything, please take the time to read each question carefully and make a conscious decision regarding whether you want or don’t want a particular program on your computer.

Without question, the 15 minutes spent reading these “download” questions and making intelligent decisions regarding what you actually wish to introduce your computer to, will save you 10’s of hours later trying to “unscrew” the mistakes you just made.

Or, you can simply call us and we will undo the damage that has already been done.
The nerdcore team is comprised of Certified Technicians who are also based in Australia. We are Pros at fixing PC’s or MACs and answering questions that you may have. Whenever we perform a repair to a PC or MAC, we run special “routines” that optimize that computer’s performance, leaving you with a computer that runs better than it ever did before!

History of Mac Malware | Virus for mac | Spyware for mac | History about Apple Devices and the virus available

History of Mac Malware

The subject that fan boys of each side love to argue about. Mac malware. The fact is that malware for Mac is real and it continues to grow as a problem. In 2012 Apple removed the statements “It doesn’t get PC viruses” and “A Mac isn’t susceptible to the thousands of viruses plaguing Windows-based computers.” I would like to shed light on the malware from beginning to now in hopes that it will bring an understanding of why security is needed on all operating systems.
1982 – The first threat that occurred was the Elk Cloner (this however did not actually affect the Mac) which would cause the Apple II to boot up with a poem:

Elk Cloner: The program with a personality
It will get on all your disks
It will infiltrate your chips
Yes, it’s Cloner!
It will stick to you like glue
It will modify RAM too
Send in the Cloner!
1987-2003

There were a few different malware families that came out but being as they are using an operating system that is not really used I won’t go into great detail. In 1987 nVIR virus began to infect Macintosh computers. In 1988 HyperCard viruses started to gain traction. HyperCard was software created by Apple to execute scripts immediately on opening. MDef was discovered in 1990. MDef infected application and system files on the Mac. In 1995 Microsoft released a virus that would infect both PC and Mac users via Microsoft Word called Concept. In 1996 Laroux, the first Excel macro virus was found but didn’t actually do anything to Macs until Excel ’98 was released. In 1998 Both AutoStart 9805 and Sevendust were discovered.

2004-Present – This brings us into the modern operating system we all know and love OS X. Also the time frame where threats are created that can still affect systems in use today.

2004 – Renepo was found. It had the ability to disable a system firewall, and it would try to copy itself to /System/Library/StartupItems.

2004– Amphimix a program which is also a MP3 file. When launched it displays a dialog box which reads “Yep, this is an application. (So what is your iTunes playing now?)” It then loads itself into iTunes as an MP3 file called “Wild Laugh”, playing four seconds laughter.

2006 – Leap is widely considered to be the original Mac Trojan. Leap used iChat to spread itself; forwarding itself as a latestpics.tgz file to the contacts on the machine. Inside the Gzipped Tar File (.tgz) was an executable file masked as a JPEG. When executed, it infected all Cocoa applications.

2006 – Inqtana was the second worm for Mac OSX. The worm propagated through a vulnerability in unpatched OSX systems.

2008 was a big year for Mac malware… Apple published an advisory to use antivirus software. They removed the statement from its website after being up for about two weeks.

2008 – BadBunny is a multi-platform worm written in several scripting languages and distributed as an OpenOffice document containing a macro. It spreads itself by dropping script files that affect the behavior of popular IRC (Internet Relay Chat) programs, causing it to send the worm to other users.

2008 – RSPlug is a Trojan that changed DNS to send users to malicious servers. It originally spread as a video codec that was downloaded from various porn websites.

2008 – AppleScript.THT tries to disable security software, steal user’s passwords, turn on file sharing, take screenshots of the desktop, and take a photo of the user via the built-in camera. The malware exploits a vulnerability with the Apple Remote Desktop Agent, which allows it to run as root.

2008 – MacSweeper, Mac’s first ‘rogue’ application (a fake antivirus misleading users by reporting infections that doesn’t exists). When the infected user tried to remove the “infections”, MacSweeper asked to provide credit card details and pay $39.99 for a “lifetime subscription serial key.”
I won’t lie, before I got into threat research, I ended up with this on my Mac…

2008 – Hovdy tried to install itself to /Library/Caches. It disabled syslog/system updates, stole password hashes, open ports in the firewall, disabled security software, installed LogKext keylogger and started web server, VNC, and SSH. It also tried to get root access by way of ARDAgent vulnerability.

2009 – Iservice was discovered in a pirated version of iWork ’09. It copied itself to /usr/bin/iWorkServices and tried to execute a HTTP request. Updated variants were later found in a pirated versions of many high use programs.

August 28, 2009 – Apple released an anti-malware tool called XProtect,at release it could protect a Mac against only two threats (RSPlug and Iservice).

2010 – HEllRTS (aka HellRaiser) is a Trojan that allows control of a computer by a remote user. The remote user has the ability to transfer files, pop up chat messages, display pictures, and even restart or shut down the infected machine.

2010 – Boonana, a Trojan that spread via social media and email disguised as a video. It runs as a Java applet, which downloads its installer to the machine. After installed it starts running in the background and communicating with a variety of servers such as command and control servers.

2011 – MacDefender, another rogue like MacSweeper that installs itself into the /Application folder and wants you to pay them for the “infections” to be removed from your mac.

2011/2012 – Flashback was disguised as a Flash player download and targets a Java vulnerability on Mac OS X. The system is infected after the user is redirected to a compromised bogus site, where JavaScript code causes an applet containing an exploit to load. The Flashback malware was the largest attack to date, hitting more than 600,000 Mac computers.

2013 – Lamadai, a backdoor Trojan, targeted NGOs (Non-Government Organizations) and exploited a Java vulnerability to drop further malware code.

2013 – Hackback spied on victims and was designed to take a list of certain file types, find all files matching those types, compress them into a zip located in /tmp/ and upload them to a remote server.

2014 – LaoShu went viral via spam emails posing as a notification from FedEx. It contacts a remote server sending system information, files, and screenshots. It is important to note that it is signed with a valid Apple developer ID certificate.

2014 – CoinThief is designed to steal Bitcoins from infected machines, and is disguised as legitimate apps. The source code was on Github for a while under an app named StealthBit.

It’s worth mentioning that these have been the main threats seen on the Mac and not all of them. There are many smaller variants and proof of concepts that are not listed. Also, that I didn’t include any adware variants such as Genieo or VSearch on here, but I did write about in my last blog. Even after seeing all of these there will still be those that refuse to believe that their mac is vulnerable to attack, but trust me it will only get worse from here. Apple is increasing their market share and with that comes an opportunity for malware writers to make more money.

We give credit to Devin Byrd for the content of this article and want to warn you that MAC’s are ABSOLUTELY vulnerable to Malware and Viruses.

Everyone, both Windows and MAC users should use a good Anti-Virus/Internet Security Software Program if searching the Internet. If you don’t, you WILL get a virus and possibly lose the functionality of your Computer and the files/photographs that it stored.

When this happens, you can call Nerdcore computers Solutions to the rescue and the majority of times we can reverse the damage.

Please periodically back-up your files and photos on either an external hard drive or a thumbdrive.
Whenever the nerdcore team performs a repair to a Computer, we also perform a complete “Optimization” which increases the performance of your Computer to be better than it was when it was brand new.

Happy computing!

Ransomware, how to protect yourself from being one of its’ victims;

Ransomware, how to protect yourself from being one of its’ victims;
As you may be aware, Ransomware is rampant on the Internet. (Hacking, then holding files, photos and critical records for ransom).
Hackers bait users by getting them to click on an infected email or open an attachment and then, BOOM!  Your files are encrypted (scrambled) and unable to be opened, read or be used.  You are then propositioned to pay a ransom in Bit Coins, (an untraceable method of payment on the Internet) to have those files “released” via an unencryption code.
This is nothing more than Stage Coach Robbery in modern times!
Last year’s report of Ransomware to business entities was 2,453 reporting a total loss of $24.1 million dollars.  You may have seen the report on the National News about 1 month ago of a Hospital (MedStar Health Inc.) with a sophisticated Computer Network and an IT Department who had been hacked by Ransomware and paid an undisclosed amount of money to get their patient and business files back.
How do you protect yourself from Ransomware?
  • Make safe and secure back-ups of your data.  (Do not keep the back-up source connected to your computer).
  • Ask us about an Anti Virus/Internet Security Software that protects you from this Krypto-Locker Virus (or variant of it) and we will have a very frank and informative discussion with you.
  • If attacked, immediately shut your system down and call us 1300637326. We may be able to shut the virus down before it infects all of your files. Do not open your files to see if they have been infected, this will allow the virus to infect them.

If you get a call from “Microsoft’s Technical Department”, Hang-Up!

If you get a call from “Microsoft’s Technical Department”, Hang-Up!

1) It is not really a call from Microsoft, it is a scam being run out of India by a group representing themselves as a “Microsoft’s Technical Department”, who have nothing to do with Microsoft.

2) Microsoft makes NO outbound telephone calls.  Microsoft has over 400 million active users and neither has the time nor inclination to call individual users to tell you that you have a virus, or that your computer is being used for illegal purposes.

The Scam:

These individuals want you to let them gain access to your computer remotely to perform a “free” analysis of the particular problem.

Then they show you “fake” results of a system scan which shows an abundance of security errors.  If you look up these scams on the Internet (even on YouTube), you will observe that there are misspellings within the scan results (like Windoows, and other simple words which are misspelled).

This is proof that the test results were pre-created and have nothing to do with your computer.

Once they have shown you the fake error results, they will quote you a price typically between $199-$299 to fix your computer.

This is a complete rip-off.  The fair price for a comprehensive computer repair is between $129-$179.

When you refuse their service, or tell them you need to think about it first, then the damage occurs.  They disable your computer and often tell you that it is now inoperable.

Never allow anyone to gain access to your computer that you don’t trust!

We have seen this occur over and over again with individuals who then come to us for a repair after dealing with these scammers.

If you are unfortunate enough to have an experience with these unscrupulous individuals and your computer is disabled, fear not, we can help you regain the full function of your computer!

Find comfort in the fact that at Nerdcore computers service centre, all of our Technicians are based in Australia, extremely well disciplined, mission oriented who use a targeted approach.  Our Technicians possess exceptional skills, are honest and know exactly what they are doing.

We never look at personal files or photographs because we have a more important job to do; getting your computer to work at its’ best and then going on to repair the next one.

By the way, we only charge $99.00 for a comprehensive computer repair, including a complete optimization of your system (getting it to run at its fastest possible speed) with no additional hourly fees, ever.

We NEVER make outbound calls.

So when someone calls you to tell you there is something wrong with your computer, simply hang up!  There is no way for them to know that information.

If you didn’t do that and find yourself in trouble, feel free to call us!

Happy Computing!

If you are using Windows 7, keep it! Windows 7

If you are using Windows 7, keep it!  Windows 7 is rock solid and works perfectly.
There is no reason to upgrade to Windows 8, 8.1 or Windows 10.  In fact the latest version of Windows 10 still has bugs, which interfere with the smooth operation of your Computer.
Microsoft is spending a lot of money advertising Windows 10, espousing its enhanced benefits.  There are some decent enhanced features, but Windows 10 still has problems.
Windows 10 has a new browser; which was Internet Explorer and is now called “Microsoft Edge”.  Microsoft Edge has a Google like presentation but actually uses Microsoft’s Bing search engine.  This is Microsoft’s way of re-introducing “Bing” which was never embraced by the marketplace.
As you will see, “Bing” has completely different search results than the industry leader Google that currently maintains 63.8% of all online search results.
Windows 10 has wireless and printer connectivity issues, which will get you to “pull your hair out”.   In all fairness, Microsoft is releasing updates every week in an attempt to fix their current Windows 10 problems, but why should you suffer while they figure them out?
In our opinion, you shouldn’t have to bear the brunt of an Operating System that was released prematurely.  Bugs with Windows 10 still exist, as do those with Windows 8 and 8.1.  The release and heavy advertising of Windows 10 seems to be an effort to soften the annoyance the marketplace is feeling towards Microsoft currently.
If you have Windows 7 keep it. Microsoft provides updates for it, peripheral manufacturers continue to make drivers for it and it works perfectly.
If you want to have the most current version of Microsoft’s Operating Systems for your PC (the bleeding edge) then go ahead and upgrade to Windows 10.  In all probability, you will be calling us to fix something, which doesn’t work anymore.
We are experts on all versions of Windows including Windows 10, 8, 8.1, Windows 7 and even Windows XP, something that Microsoft stopped supporting over a year ago.  We can provide you with a “fix” which will allow Windows XP to continue to receive updates thru 2019.  That’s magic!

What is Microsoft Live anyway? Microsoft Live is the facility in Windows 10, which is part of the initial set-up.

What is Microsoft Live anyway?

Microsoft Live is the facility in Windows 10, which is part of the initial set-up.

Microsoft Live asks you to set-up a username and password “online”. This may seem innocuous, but it is possibly quite problematic.

The Problem:

Microsoft Live gets you to set-up your machine username and password online, using Microsoft’s Servers. If you forget your username/password, you will be unable to get into your computer. Period, end of story.

We feel that using any 3rd party (not your own locally controlled platform) to store essential and important information like username/password is intrusive.  Allowing the release and control for such events could lead to other intrusive events which pertain to accessing to your personal information.  We are not saying that Microsoft is looking at your personal data, only that under circumstances like this, they could.  The fact that your username/password are stored on their servers (not your computer) and that you need their servers to connect to your computer to unlock it, by definition establishes the fact that they have established a link to your computer for at least this function alone.  Where and when that link is limited, we don’t know.  You can draw your own conclusions from here.

The greatest problem with Microsoft Live in our opinion is that it is an online event.  If your Internet is not operational, you cannot access those Microsoft Servers, which contain your username/password, and you will be unable to get into your computer.

Internet interruptions occur quite often.  Are you willing to wait until your Internet is back up before being able to use your computer?  We don’t think so.  If your Internet is down and your username /password are stored locally, you would be able to turn your computer on and use the “Hotspot” feature on your cell phone to temporarily access the Internet while waiting for your home/business based Internet service to come back up, allowing you to do important work.

The Solution:

Decline the Microsoft Live option and you will be brought to the next menu option, which is to set-up your username/password locally.

Locally means the username/password will be stored on your physical computer (like it used to be) and short of forgetting your username/password you are completely autonomous, controlling your own destiny.

We recommend using a small spiral type notebook to store all of your username/passwords, email address/passwords, etc.  Keep this book in a safe place.

We receive calls all of the time from users who have forgotten their login usernames and passwords, even machine usernames and passwords.  Fear not.  We can still help you to gain access to both your Windows and MAC Computers if you are locked out and unable to get in.

Happy Computing!

Our Story Is like Neighbours lets have a good day

For over 25 years, Nerdcore has been The trusted source for IT support.

Early History: IT Support for Architects and Engineers

Nerdcore was founded in 2001. In the early years, most of our clients were architectural and engineering firms in Australia. In those days, it wasn’t easy to buy a CAD workstation. You couldn’t just go online, and custom configure a PC with a high-end graphics card and enough RAM to run leading edge CAD software. Nerdcore built a thriving business around providing specialized computer hardware sales, network configuration, and support. Our “Microstation” CAD workstations set the standard for performance and reliability.

Growing Expertise, Expanding Influence

As time went on, Nerdcore assembled an unrivaled pool of talent. Word spread about the technical insight and exemplary service provided by Nerdcore staff members. Before long we became the leading IT support provider in the South for IT businesses, retail, manufacturing, legal, financial services, health care, non-profit orgs, educational institutions and much more. As our consulting business grew, we eventually phased out of selling hardware and software.

We Transformed Our Approach to Better Serve YOU

Typically, IT support providers subscribe to one of two philosophies: 1) managed services or 2) break fix.

Managed services providers offer pre-packaged IT support plans that almost never deliver a perfect match to their clients’ needs. The managed services approach is clumsy and inefficient. It might appear to be a good deal at first glance but “predictable pricing” proves to be a false economy when necessary services are deemed “out-of-scope.”

Break-fix support providers literally wait for a disaster to happen before acting. Break fix is risky!

In 2008, while many other IT support providers were still offering break-fix support, or were just beginning to adopt the managed services model, Nerdcore transformed IT support strategy.

We adopted a framework for support that is predictable and proactive while also being custom tailored to our clients’ needs. We employ flexible strategies that enable Nerdcore to complement internal IT departments without competing with them.

Our customer-focused approach to delivering IT support has proven to be wildly successful. It has resulted in tens of thousands of happy computer users at hundreds of businesses, and a decade (and going) of consistent double-digit year over year growth for Nerdcore

We leverage our comparatively large size to deliver response times, service levels, and a depth of expertise that other firms can’t match.
